Corex Honeycomb | Aluminium Honeycomb for the Rail Industry

2022-07-22 07:29:34 By : Mr. Mark Wang

Corex Honeycomb is the only UK based manufacturer of aluminium honeycomb core, with over 30 years of experience in composites. Many tonnes of our honeycomb are used in parts made for the rail industry through worldwide manufacturers. When used in a bonded composite sandwich panel, the high strength to weight ratio and corrosion resistance make it suitable for a range of products throughout the rail sector. Corex aluminium honeycomb can be used to manufacture doors, floors, furniture, galley and sanitary modules and panel partitions for rail interiors.

Both aluminium honeycomb and flexible aluminium honeycomb can be used within composite panels to manufacture doors and walls thanks to their high strength to weight ratio. The way Superflex is manufactured allows curved composite panels with multiple angles to be produced.

Aluminium honeycomb’s high strength makes it suitable for use in furniture. Supportive pieces can be made that are less likely to be damaged on a train, without adding too much weight to the vehicle.

Thanks to the high strength to weight ratio, aluminium honeycomb is an excellent product for use in train flooring. It is lightweight but also strong and is a fantastic choice of product when manufacturing flooring suitable for rolling stock applications.

Aluminium honeycomb that is treated is resistant to water and other chemical effects, making it highly suitable for use in galley and sanitary modules.

Corex Honeycomb has been involved in many exciting rail projects including: the energy efficient Heathrow Personal Rapid Transit Pods where aluminium honeycomb was used in the chassis and floor of the pods and the Hitachi Class 800 train, working with a manufacturer of lightweight structures.

We also supply aluminium honeycomb to a large rail company which specialises in the life extension, overhaul, maintenance, and refurbishment of rolling stock in the UK and our aluminium honeycomb has been used in train doors for the Eurostar high-speed railway service connecting London with mainland Europe.

The company works closely with a French train interior designer and manufacturer where aluminium honeycomb is used to form train floors, doors and other rail-related products.

Mehrdad Asadi, PhD, engineer at Corex Honeycomb, shares his knowledge of energy absorbers and the role that aluminium honeycomb has to play.

Lightweight aluminium honeycomb is an asset to the rail industry, a sector which is increasingly focused on becoming more sustainable.

Why is aluminium honeycomb so strong? The properties are determined by the manufacturing process of the product.

The Corex team are pleased to announce that we will be exhibiting at Railtex, taking place at the NEC, Birmingham, from 7th to 9th September.

Corex Honeycomb is the only UK manufacturer of aluminium honeycomb. The material is supplied in both expanded and unexpanded formats.

Aluminium honeycomb is a versatile material which can be used across a wide range of industries including rail, marine, automotive and more.
